A recognized geneticist, passionate about photography, and a longtime supporter of the art form, Dr. Kronn, originally from Dublin, began his collection in New York in the early 1990s. What started as a reflection of classic twentieth-century developments soon expanded to include artists and subjects who had recently achieved leading international recognition, such as Evelyn Hofer, Graciela Iturbide, Daido Moriyama, Malick Sidibé, and Pieter Hugo. To this were added exciting developments in contemporary Irish photography, driven in particular by artists such as Alice Maher, Anna Rackard, Amelia Stein, and David Farrell.
Dr. Kronn's ambition is to build a photographic collection of international scope at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, where his donations already number 1,200 works. This selection draws on the notion of portraiture in its broadest sense in order to explore the echoes between cultures in matters of tradition, ritual, and myth, as well as aspects of the contemporary social fabric and diversity. Transformed by the lens, these images leave a mark that is at once timeless and deeply alive.
Exhibition presented in collaboration with the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
