For more than twenty years, Carl Corey has photographed the landscapes, architecture, and inhabitants of the American Midwest. In Les lumières qui restent, he composes a sensitive portrait of an America far removed from centers of power and familiar representations. Gas stations, taverns, motels, local shops, and gathering places become the silent witnesses of a collective history built on work, attachment, and resilience.
Somewhere between documentary and contemplation, his images reveal human presence even as they suggest its absence. Light plays an essential role throughout: it illuminates the places themselves, but also the stories they carry within them. Through these photographs, Carl Corey shows us an ordinary America, deeply rooted in its own territory, where every façade, every sign, and every interior tells a particular way of inhabiting the world.
Galerie Catherine et André Hug
Founded in 2000 in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Galerie Catherine et André Hug is dedicated to contemporary photography. After twenty-five years in its Parisian space, it now runs a program independent of any permanent venue, through exhibitions, fairs, and projects in France and abroad. The gallery supports artists with distinctive voices, whose works explore reality, memory, imagination, and the narrative potential of the image.
