Années 1930 et modernité : l'âge d'or des revues médicales (1930s and Modernity: the golden age of medical publications)
The exhibition Années 1930 et modernité: l'âge d'or des revues médicales (1930s and Modernity: the golden age of medical publications) highlights the link between the pharmaceutical world and photographic modernity through three publications: Art et Médecine, Mieux Vivre and Diversion.
All three were funded by pharmaceutical companies and distributed to doctors. Their purpose was to promote their products. What made them special? Apart from advertising, there was little or no mention of medicine or drugs. These luxurious, confidential magazines gave a prominent place to the literature of their time, as well as to the great names of modern photography: André Kertész, Germaine Krull, François Kollar, Brassaï, Man Ray, Nora Dumas, Jean Moral, Roger Schall, René Zuber, Ergy Landau, Gaston Paris, André Steiner...
Art et Médecine, Mieux Vivre and Diversion were part of the proliferation of pharmaceutical publications at the time. They stood out for the prestige of their contributors and the refinement of their layouts. With their modern presentation, rich illustrations and high-quality printing, these magazines vied with each other to entertain doctors and encourage them to buy their products. Their content, somewhere between classicism and modernity, also embodied the ambiguities of 1930s France, which was as forward-looking as it was attached to its traditions.
The Paris Faculty of Pharmacy
Located in the heart of Paris, close to the Senate and the Luxembourg Gardens, the Paris Faculty of Health's buildings, most of which were built from the late 19th century, contain a wealth of artistic and historical features (paintings, sculptures, furniture, earthenware, botanical garden, etc.) reflecting its teaching and research activities over the years.
